A natural scratching post for my friends cats!
This project is something that turned out way nicer than expected. My friend and I built a scratching post for his cats out of an old tree and some concrete.
As a base, we used a huge bucket that is usually used for mixing concrete. For the platforms, we got old wooden discs from my grandfather and for the post itself we used dead wood that we found next to my friend’s parking lot. To create a cozy lying area, we bought some fluffy fabric and I crocheted some toys for playtime.
Our first step was to prepare the wooden post and discs, so we sanded them and subsequently filled the bucket with concrete. To avoid the wood getting soaked, we put it into a plastic bag before we positioned it in the concrete base. After the concrete had fully dried, we positioned the wooden discs and used some screws and wood glue to hold them in place. With my sewing machine, I made pillows from the fabric, and we added a hammock and a crochet toy that I made for extra comfort ≽(◕ ᴗ ◕)≼ . On the wooden base we added some siam-rope as scratching elements. To keep the rope in place we used hot glue and a stapler.
It was a fun and simple project with upcycled or cheap materials that turned out beautiful, stable and useful. I’m looking forward to building one for my own cats, as soon as I know where to put it.
Here are some pictures of the project and the finished scratching post, enjoy:
